Did you know?
- Depression is often missed in men, as the symptoms tend to differ from
women, or be disregarded as nervousness, anger or frustration
- Men are more likely than women to turn to alcohol or drugs when they are depressed / during times of stress, or become frustrated, discouraged, irritable, angry and sometimes abusive.
- Some men throw themselves into their work to avoid talking about their depression or health issues with family or friends, or engage in reckless activities
- 40% of men over 40 years old do not use condoms during sex, which disputes the myth that only young men get STD’s
- 8% are infertile, with rates increasing. Often is it treatable.
- Often men need even more care when it comes to their health, as it is often forgotten about or pushed aside until an illness becomes very serious. Most men are reluctant to see and doctor or practitioner until it is causing serious symptoms
- As many men die from prostate cancer as women die from breast cancer – however – while 78% of women feel well informed about breast cancer – only 52% of men felt informed about prostate cancer
These are just some of the reasons why men’s health is fast becoming a more important sector in community health, and why it so at the fore of the services at Chirinka.
Certain illnesses are much more likely in men of certain age groups, and often include areas such as:
- Mental Health, anxiety & depression
- Heart Problems & other circulatory disorders
- Sexual Health Issues (such as premature ejaculation, infertility & erectile dysfunction)
- Diabetes
- Arthritis & muscular pains (particularly work related joint issues & occupational health and safety)
- Family relationship issues, work and career, and sexuality issues
- Diet & exercise difficulties (including sedentary work, obesity & general weight problems)
- Social difficulties, social fears, loneliness, social self esteem issues
“ For a long time now, women’s health has had a primary place in many clinics, whilst men’s health has had to take back seat on the road to good health, or worse – been put on the scrap heap. It is time that men got back in the drivers seat of empowerment, and were taught how to wield the vehicle that is their own health & happiness.” ~ Hania Trzaskowski
